Christmas shopping on a budget usually means one of two things: something forgettable from a big-box store, or something that looks more expensive than it is. This list is the second kind.
Every gift below is under $30, made or finished by hand in our Shenzhen studio, and chosen because it looks like it cost more than it did. We have grouped them by who you are shopping for, so you can scan straight to the right section.
A note on timing: everything is made to order and dispatched in 3–5 business days. Order by the end of November if you want it under the tree.
How to choose a handmade gift in five minutes
Most gift lists start with the products. That is the wrong order. Under $30, what decides whether a gift lands is rarely the object itself — it is whether you matched the format to the person. Get that right and almost anything on this page works. Get it wrong and even a good mug feels like filler.
So before the list, five questions. Answer them in order and you will know exactly which section to shop from.
A finished mug is a thing someone owns. A DIY kit is a thing someone does, usually with someone else. Kits work for people who already craft, for couples, for kids on a rainy afternoon, and for anyone who has enough stuff. Finished pieces work for people you do not know well, or who would rather receive than make. This single answer splits the whole list in two.
The better you know someone, the more specific — and more risky — you can be. A colleague or a neighbour needs something universally liked: a good mug, a candle, a box of cards. A partner, a sister or a close friend can take a patterned headband, a hand-calligraphed fan, a cat mug that is exactly their humour. When in doubt, buy a neutral object and put the personality in the message, not the design.
A name on a shell keychain or a photo on a mug turns a $20 object into a keepsake — but only if the person will actually use it that way. Personalised gifts are strongest for partners, parents, bridesmaids and children, and weakest for the office secret santa, where the recipient may not want their name on a mug. Also budget an extra 2–3 days in production; that rules personalised items out for late December orders.
Everything here is made or finished after you order: 3–5 business days in the studio, then 10–18 business days in transit. That means a standard gift needs to be ordered by late November, and a personalised one about a week earlier. If you are already inside December, choose a non-personalised item and accept the faster path rather than gambling on a custom piece.
Under $10 buys you a stocking filler that has to be charming: the cottage ornament, a small kit. $15–20 is the sweet spot for craft kits and coasters — enough materials to feel substantial. $25–30 is where hand-thrown ceramics, silk and personalised pieces live, and where a gift starts to look like it cost more than it did. Pick the band first, then the format; it removes two thirds of the page immediately.
- Do not know them well? → a mug or a candle, no name on it.
- They already have everything? → a DIY kit, because the evening is the gift.
- It is a partner, parent or bridesmaid? → personalise it, order by 20 November.
- Shopping in December? → skip customisation, choose what is already in stock.
